What clothes after surgery? Practicality before beauty!
Whether you’ve had heart, knee or hip surgery, you’re going to need more practical clothing. What was worn before the operation has to stay in the closet for the time being.
In addition to the everyday aches and pains that come with getting older, we also have to have more operations as we get older. However, heart, hip and knee interventions are also the reason why seniors have to be treated as inpatients.
In the best case, everything goes without complications and you are discharged home for further recovery. Sometimes a stay in rehab is necessary. This is where the problem starts at the latest, because the physical handicap means that the skirt or pants no longer fit the way they did before the operation. Often, the beloved items of clothing may no longer be worn at all because they impede wound healing or cause pain.
Good advice is expensive now, because how do you dress most flatteringly and comfortably without looking like you’re pressed into a sack. The best way to proceed is that a garment is bought according to the relevant OP and then combined with existing ones.
The right clothes after knee surgery
First and foremost, you should try to put as little stress on your knees as possible. At least this applies to all activities outside of physiotherapy. Aids such as a gripper arm with a magnetic tip can be very helpful in everyday work. Clothing that has fallen down can be picked up without pain. In the house it is best to wear slippers, not slippers.
Be sure to choose flat shoes for going outside and put them on with a long shoehorn. This relieves your knee. For socks, choose a pair that was made without a fixed elastic band.
Even if the waistband does not sit directly on the knee, tight fabric can have a negative effect on the knee (lymphatic flow). Loose-fitting models are the easiest to put on anyway. When it comes to pants, it’s better to be wider than too tight. Even if it’s not one of your other principles, after knee surgery you can go outside in jogging pants.
The right clothes after cardiac surgery
As already mentioned above, interventions on the heart using cardiac catheters are among the most common examinations in old age. Likewise, bypass operations are almost routine for doctors, but not for the patient. If you have successfully survived the operation, you shouldn’t expect too much of your heart, even on the outside. In some patients, the sternum is still swollen after a long time, or pain is caused by the drainage.
Now it’s time to be careful and don’t wear tight outerwear. Loose sweaters are ideal. But shirts or blouses are also suitable because you do not have to pull them over your head. It is best to always choose one size larger than what you normally wear. If that’s too cold for you, you can also wear a cardigan or sweat jacket with a zip over it. Garments that can be opened at the front are always the most practical.
The right clothing after abdominal or hip surgery
After an operation on the abdomen, you are physically quite limited. It gets even more complicated with an artificial hip joint . Rehabilitation measures almost always follow immediately after hip surgery.
The clothes you need there must first and foremost be practical. I recommend light, sporty clothing for the individual applications. Don’t worry, you won’t cut a bad figure there in a jogging suit. The sportswear is practically the house uniform in the rehabilitation center .
However, if you want to dress up a bit in the evening, or are looking for clothes that you can easily wear for a walk, you will find what you are looking for at Witt Weiden.
In particular, the slip-on pants are made for hip surgery patients. When getting dressed and otherwise, you should not bend down too much. Pants that can simply be slipped over the legs and are only held in place by an elastic band at the waistband are perfect and also look good.
When it comes to shoes, look for flat models that are ideally closed with Velcro. Always use a shoehorn to put your shoes on and support yourself with one hand.
The right clothes after shoulder surgery
Even if you mean it, most accidents in old age do not happen due to bad weather conditions such as black ice or snow , but in the home. Some people just take on too much and suddenly they fall.
The result can be a tendon rupture in the shoulder, which then has to be treated surgically. In the hospital itself you will need buttoned pajamas.
Nightgowns that have to be pulled over the head will not be tolerated by the staff. For at home, get loose tops that you can wear with one arm.
The following applies here: Jackets are better than sweaters. Make sure there are as few frills as possible, such as buckles or eyelets. If you dress in an onion look, you can always put on or take off a part if necessary. Also, keep in mind that you may have a thick bandage.
The tops should therefore be cut quite wide. It is not always necessary to buy new, ask family members if someone can lend you something, because as we all know, time heals all wounds and you can then give the clothes back.
