Why is diabetes education needed?

Diabetes is a health problem that significantly affects a person’s daily life.

To achieve success in treatment;

  • It is required that the person with diabetes should be accepted as a member of the team that makes the treatment and must take responsibility.
  • The person with diabetes should be able to take decisions on its own in order to manage the disease, if required.

All of this to happen is possible with patient education.

Diabetes education

  • Should improve the person’s adaptation and acceptance to the disease, well-being, the quality of life,
  • Should be planned, meet the needs of the person,
  • Should encourage the person with diabetes in order to change-correct risk factors that may affect diabetes,
  • Should take the person’s physical, psychosocial, religious, cultural, socio-economic needs into account,
  • Should be carried out with the collaboration of health professionals from different disciplines,
  • Should bring different options in managing the disease to the patient’s mind using the knowledge acquired and should allow to choose the most suitable for her/him,
  • Should show continuity in a way that will help the patient to solve the lifelong changes,
  • Should also include the family and friends.

Educators

  • Should have adequate knowledge and experience,
  • Should show understanding to the choices and wishes of the person with diabetes, should try to find solutions.

What kind of education does Liv Hospital diabetes team give?

Individual educations with regard to conditions such as insulin use, blood sugar measurement, foot care are given by diabetes nurse in Liv Hospital. While diet education is scheduled by dieticians on an individual basis.

Other than individual education of people with diabetes in the outpatient follow-up, group educations under the name of Diabetes Workshop are also carried out regularly by Liv Hospital Diabetes team.

Diabetes Workshop: “Breakfast at Liv”

  • The team is composed of; Endocrinologist (Assoc. Prof. Serpil Salman, MD), Internal Medicine Specialist (Alev Ozsarı, MD), Dietitians (Diet. Serap Guzel, Diet. Burcu Erdol, Diet. Sukran Yildiz) and Diabetes Nurse (Emal Namoglu). In addition, physicians from different specialties, health professionals and even experienced people with diabetes can give educational support.
  • Patients with diabetes participate education with one of their accompany by appointment.
  • Environment for nutrition education is created by open-buffet breakfast. The patients are informed by conversations about basic diabetes education needs such as insulin injection, the time to take medications, exercise, foot care, acute and chronic complications and vaccinations.

Diabetes is a common disease in the adult population. In addition to disorders due to the increase of blood sugar it may cause damage in several organs such as cardiovascular system, eye, kidney, nervous system and foot wounds. The person’s diet, exercise and medication treatment processes should be carried out together in the treatment of the disease.

Both follow-up of the patient with diabetes through a collaboration of physicians from different departments and health workers as well as to have enough information about the disease is needed in order to overcome these processes. The goal of Liv Hospital diabetes outpatient clinic is to help patients on these matters.

Liv Hospital outpatient diabetes clinic team consists of diabetes nurse experienced on the field, dietician, internal medicine specialists and endocrinologists. Individual trainings are also given in the outpatient clinic as well as the group training with “Diabetes School”. Technological treatment and follow-up systems such as insulin pump, continuous glucose monitoring (CGMS) are also applied in our outpatient clinic.

Patients with diabetes must often admit physicians in other fields of expertise in the follow-up due to concomitant health problems. Liv Hospital is working in collaboration with experienced physicians on cardiology, nephrology, eye diseases, pain medicine and neurology areas within the team. Diabetic foot and wound care council composed of endocrinology, orthopedics, peripheral vascular surgery, plastic surgery, infectious diseases and regenerative medicine (stem cell therapy) specialists is the privilege of our hospital.
