Introduction of Department

“Under the principle that the ability to draw breath is the most valuable gift bestowed upon humankind, Liv Hospital treats chest diseases as well as breathing and snoring problems in its Sleep Laboratory.”

The Liv Hospital Department of Chest Diseases diagnoses and treats various chest diseases and lung cancer cases as well as conducting allergy tests and giving advice on giving up smoking. It also offers alternative treatments for chest disease-related sleep problems, breathing difficulties and snoring issues.

Spirometric, reversibility, flow-volume curve, diffusion capacity, exercise and maximal oxygen consumption tests, Nitric Oxide measurement, and arterial blood gas measurements are carried out at the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. Comprehensive allergy skin testing is also provided.

Rigid bronchoscopy, fiber optic bronchoscopy (with the most advanced videobronchoscopy), and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) are used to diagnose various lung diseases, including lung cancer, while argon plasma coagulation (APC), electrocoagulation, cryotherapy, and endobronchial stents are amongst the advanced treatment methods available to Liv Hospital patients. Our department’s dedicated Sleep Laboratory diagnoses and treats a range of sleep related issues including snoring problems. When required, the Liv Hospital multidisciplinary approach means that ENT specialists are consulted to evaluate surgical options in appropriate cases.

Smoking is the most significant risk factor in cancer and heart diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hypertension, gastro – intestinal diseases, and various other types of cancer. You will never feel alone in giving up smoking with the help of our special unit for giving up smoking. Non-invasive mechanical ventilation is provided to ICU and other in-patients using advanced Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BIPAP) respiratory support equipment. Some of the diseases that are diagnosed and treated at the Department include:

  • Allergic lung diseases
  • Obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Pneumonia
  • Pleurisy
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Sleep apnea
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Pneumothorax
  • Pulmonary Embolism

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is one of the diseases most commonly treated at the Liv Hospital Department of Chest Diseases, which applies the latest interventional bronchoscopy methods in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Decisions concerning the treatment of lung cancer patients are taken by a “Tumor Committee” composed of physicians from different medical specialties, rather than by a single doctor. These committees decide whether surgery, chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy are the most appropriate options in line with their detailed assessment of the patient’s individual case and condition.

Allergy Tests

Allergy tests carried out at the Liv Hospital Department of Chest Diseases, determine the cause of a patient’s allergy and provide patients with information on the most appropriate treatment and preventive measures. Respiratory tests carried out to detect chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) evaluate whether, and to what extent, lung capacity has been affected; nurses provide advice and assistance on giving up smoking as appropriate.

Sleep Laboratory

A good night’s sleep is the best way to ensure a healthy start to the day. Everyone needs healthy sleep for a good life, a more productive working life and for general happiness. Liv Hospital has established a laboratory dedicated to issues related to this most crucial of elements in people’s general health and wellbeing, and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep conditions. Doctors initially analyze the factors that are underlying the patient’s sleeping problems. In the event that testing reveals the problem is related to chest disease, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is begun. But the cause of the patient’s sleep issues sometimes lies elsewhere; the cause may require specialist neurologic, ENT or psychiatric consultations. In this case, the Liv Hospital multidisciplinary approach allows the Sleep Laboratory to refer patients to the relevant Departments for evaluation and treatment.
